Introduction/Rationale: Eco-immunology is an interdisciplinary field that examines the immune function in ecological and evolutionary contexts. Interest in this understudied field has increased due to effects of climate change, novel pathogens, and One Health concerns. By integrating immunology with ecology and evolution, an explanation of life-history trade-offs in population can be addressed. To address gaps in traditional biology curriculum, we developed an interactive module focused on immunological and evolutionary fitness and life-history trade-offs. By utilizing graphs and static models, this resource integrates immunology, ecology, and evolution while helping students develop their skills in quantitative and scientific reasoning.
Methods: Students completed a pre-assessment to determine a baseline understanding of eco-immunology concepts and competencies. They then completed an interactive module that introduced the concepts related to evolutionary and immunological fitness and life history trade-offs using graphs and static models. After completing the module, students completed a post-assessment that contained the same questions as the pre- and a survey on self-perception of their understanding.
Results: The percentage of relative frequency was determined on a five-point likert scale for each competency and concept. Most students reported agree, with few reporting strongly disagree or disagree for both competencies and concepts. Overall test scores and individual question responses were compared using a Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed rank test. Overall test scores showed a significant increase from pre- to post-assessment. Question based analysis indicated a significant gain on questions 1-7 but not question 8.
Conclusion: Overall test scores indicate students performed better on the post-assessment after completing the module. Most students were also in agreement of their increased understanding of various concepts and competencies after completing the interactive module.
